Raymond Wai-Yung Wu was a consultant cardiologist at St Teresa’s Hospital, Hong Kong. He was born in Ningpo, China, the son of Wu Chi Ho, a merchant, and Wu Chow Mai Ching, a housewife. Two of his brothers also became doctors. He was educated at St Joseph’s College, and then went on to study medicine at the University of Hong Kong. He qualified in 1963 with a distinction in social medicine.

He was a house physician and then a house surgeon at Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong. From 1964 he was a medical officer for the Hong Kong government, becoming a senior medical officer in 1971. In 1974 he was an acting consultant physician, and in the same year was appointed as a cardiologist at St Teresa’s.

In 1965 he married Maida Elizabeth Wu, a teacher. They had a daughter and two sons.
