Masud Anwar was a consultant physician in general medicine and elderly care at the General Hospital, Hartlepool. Born in Jullundur, India, he was the son of Abdul Majid, a manager of military farms and his wife, Azra Majid. Educated at the Government High School in Jullundur, his family emigrated to Pakistan during the partition of India. He studied medicine at the King Edward Medical College and the Mayo Hospital in Lahore, Pakistan. Qualifying in 1954, he was a junior medical officer with the West Pakistan Health Service until 1963 when he came to the UK to study for a diploma in tropical medicine. He did house jobs in Scotland at Falkirk Royal Infirmary, Hartwood Hospital and Gateside Hospital, Greenock from 1965 to 1973, and then joined the staff at Stoke on Trent as a senior medical registrar.
Appointed consultant physician in general medicine and elderly care at the General Hospital in Hartlepool in 1975, he oversaw the care and treatment of elderly patients in the department of geriatric and general medicine and founded a successful day care unit. He was chairman of the British Medical Association for a while and of the Pakistan Medical Society for the North East.
He published papers on a variety of topics such as stroke rehabilitation, restless legs syndrome, hearing aids and confusion in the elderly.
Interested by the possibilities of acupuncture, he became a registered practitioner. Other interests were photography and swimming and he was a keen gardener. A convivial man, he did a lot for the local community and, in 1981, raised the most sponsorship in the local Boxing Day dip. After his retirement from the hospital in 1996, he worked for Atos Medical Healthcare in Thornaby.
In 1958 he married Farrukh née Niaz whose father Niaz-ud-din was dean of the Hygiene and Preventive Medicine Institute in Lahore. When he died after a short battle with cancer he was survived by his wife, their children, son Tahir, a consultant physician at Nottingham City Hospital, daughters Saira, also medically qualified and Saima, a barrister and four grandchildren.
