John Alan Richard Anderson was a consultant dermatologist in Norfolk and Norwich. Born in Edinburgh, he was the son of Herbert Leonard, an underwriter, and his wife, Elsie, who was a teacher. Educated at Bournemouth School, he studied medicine at King’s College, London and the Westminster Hospital.

After qualifying tin 1967 he did house jobs at the Westminster, followed by St James’ in Balham and Acton Hospital in 1969. He was a registrar in dermatology at the Royal Free Hospital in 1970 and, moving to Scotland, a registrar in Paisley the following year. In 1974 he became senior registrar and lecturer in dermatology at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and, four years later, a consultant dermatologist to the West Norfolk and Wisbech district health authority.

The author of papers on hirsutism and clinical dermatology, he was a member of the British Association of Dermatologists.

Outside medicine he enjoyed skiing, sailing, playing golf and listening to music.

In 1984 he married Alison Elizabeth née Cunningham and they had a daughter and two sons. When he died his family survived him, including his son Hamish.
