Frederick Stephen Carter was born at Nutfield, Surrey, the son of Robert Leonard Carter, a stockbroker. There were family connexions with Elizabeth Fry. He was educated at St Lawrence College, Ramsgate, and Queens’ College, Cambridge, proceeding to the Middlesex Hospital, where he qualified in 1942.

Carter spent some time in the Merchant Navy and then joined the Colonial Medical Service, serving in Kenya, Sierra Leone and Aden. He retired from the Service in 1963 and took a post as senior lecturer in medicine at Khartoum University. On his return to England he became consultant paediatrician to the Romford group of hospitals. He moved to Jersey in 1971, where he was appointed consultant paediatrician.

Carter wrote several papers on paediatric problems in the tropics, his last paper being a comparison of the growth and development of baby gorillas with human infants, at birth and during the postnatal period.

In 1947 he married Nym, daughter of William Wilson Grantham JP. They had two sons and a daughter; one son entered the medical profession. In his leisure time he enjoyed singing in a male voice choir, and cycling and swimming.
