Braj Mittra was a consultant physician in Sunderland with a special interest in cardiology. He was born in Banaras, Uttar Pradesh, India, the son of Kashi Nath Mittra, a banker, and Taru Bala Mittra, a housewife. Mittra’s elder brother went on to become a doctor, practising in India. Mittra went to St John’s High school in Agra, Utter Pradesh, and then attended SN Medical College, Agra. He qualified in 1956.

From 1960 to 1961 he was a senior house officer at Middlesbrough General Hospital. From 1962 to 1964 he was a registrar at Salford Royal Hospital. He then became a senior registrar and tutor in medicine at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. For six months, from July 1966 to February 1967, he was an acting lecturer at Queen’s University, Belfast.

In 1967 he was appointed as a consultant physician in Sunderland. He wrote papers on myocardial infarction and contributed chapters to textbooks.

In 1963 he married Carole, a former nurse and midwife. They had one son and one daughter. At the time of his election to the fellowship of the RCP he listed badminton and computer programming as his interests.
