Basil Christie was a consultant in rheumatology and rehabilitation in the Canterbury and South East Kent areas. He was born in Congleton, Cheshire, where his father was a chief constable of the police, and educated at Bedford School and then Ampleforth. He went on to study medicine at Guy's, graduating in 1949.

His house officer posts were at Guy's and at Dreadnought Hospital, Greenwich. He then joined the department of rheumatology at the Middlesex Hospital, as a registrar. From 1949 to 1956 he was a junior surgical specialist in the RAMC.

In 1956 he was appointed to the post of senior registrar and chief assistant in the physical medicine department at St Thomas's Hospital. And in 1961 he became a consultant in rheumatology and rehabilitation to the Canterbury, Thanet and South East Kent districts.

He published papers on, among other subjects, tenosynovitis, rheumatism, ankylosing spondylitis and on Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

At the time of his election to the Fellowship of the College he listed ornithology, gardening and collecting porcelain and stamps as his interests. He married Mavis Joan Gibbs in 1949 and they had two sons.
