William Alexander, son of Dr. Gervase Alexander, came of a family that had practised medicine in the Halifax district for two centuries. He was educated at Hipperholme Grammar School and Edinburgh University, and took his degree in 1830. Settling in his native town, he was physician to Halifax Infirmary for nearly fifty years. He was also a member of the Council of Edinburgh University. Among his written works was one on The Spa Water and Sea-bathing of Scarborough. He died at Halifax.
