Martin Addy was the first consultant paediatrician in Burton upon Trent and for several years the only paediatrician there. He was born in Stroud, Gloucestershire, the son of Walter George Addy and Helen Florence Addy née Hulse, and was educated at Marling School in that town. His undergraduate career was at the University of Bristol, where he qualified in 1958.

After National Service, he had several junior hospital posts in Bristol and Gloucester before completing his paediatric training as a senior registrar in Oxford and on the West Midlands (Birmingham) rotation. He worked alone as a paediatrician in Burton, establishing a paediatric department from scratch.

In his leisure time, Martin focused on spending time with his family and friends. He had a ready sense of humour and keen interests in botany and photography. He was survived by his wife Wendy (née Stevens), two sons and a granddaughter.
