Stanley Crowther was born in Bradford, the son of Thomas Edward Crowther and his wife, Mary Hannah, née Baines. After attending school in his home town, he went to Cambridge to read chemistry, physics and mathematics. When he graduated he became a buyer at Harrods, but he later turned to medicine and entered University College Hospital in 1939, where he was awarded the senior clinical medicine prize.

After a variety of hospital jobs in London, and two years with the RAMC in Nigeria and Germany, he began to specialise in thoracic medicine and worked at Clare Hall Hospital and Paddington Chest Clinic. In 1956 he went to Chesterfield as a senior hospital medical officer, and in 1961 he was appointed consultant chest physician to Ransom Hospital in Mansfield and the Nottingham Chest Clinic. Later he also had duties at the Nottingham City Hospital, and he occupied these posts with distinction. When he retired in 1972 he worked at the Nottingham University Health Centre, and maintained a lively interest in medicine until he died. He was throughout a meticulous, skilled and kind physician.

At Cambridge Stan won a Blue for football. In later life he was a keen walker on hills and on mountains, as well as ‘Ban the Bomb’ marches from Aldermaston. He travelled widely and he was always interested in the customs and ways of other nations. In 1936 he married Ellen, daughter of John Wilson, and they had two sons.
